Our History:
The Beginnings:
|
|
Adélard Perron
|
Founded by Adélard Perron in 1890, the Fromagerie Perron is certainly
the oldest cheese factory in Quebec and the only private company exporting
its Cheddar cheese in England for more than a century. Its worldwide reputation
of excellence has never failed. It is also the only cheese factory in Quebec
and Canada having been owned consecutively by four direct descendants.

The Old Chesse Factory
|
The old Perron Cheese Factory was built in 1895 by Adélard Perron in
St-Prime, Lac St-Jean. In 1989, this cheese factory was classified as national
cultural property and heritage building. In 1992, Albert Perron legally passed
on his old creamery to a non-profit corporation. This is how the Cheddar Museum
was born.
First Generation (1890 - 1917)
Adélard Perron, was 25 years old when he started
producing aged Cheddar cheese and exporting it to England, which he did up
to 1917.
Why in England? Canada was a British colony and had to pay royalties to its
peers. Cheese was a type of food that could keep through the long ship travel
to the old continent. It was also an ideal way of supporting the farming economy
at the time.
Second Generation (1917 - 1963)

The Perrons (Second
Generation)
|
Johnny Perron, Adélard's son, carried on from his father
in 1917. During his short tenure as manager of the company, he acquired the
necessary equipment for the production of butter, and initiated a new type
of fabrication. In 1920, Joseph Perron, Adélard's oldest son bought
off the family business from his brother Johnny and made it prosper for forty
more years. When Joseph died in 1960, his wife Marie Lamontagne inherited
the creamery and maintained it operational until 1963.
Third Generation (1963 - 2000)

Albert Perron
|
Albert Perron, Marie Lamontagne and Joseph Perron's oldest
son, bought the creamery from his mother in 1963. Six years later, in 1969,
he built a new factory annexed to the old one. This new and modern cheese
factory promoted the Albert Perron management to a level of production unparalleled
production.
Fourth Generation (2000
)
Since 2000, Jean-Marc Perron, son of Albert and president
of Fromagerie Perron, his two partners Sylvie Beaudoin, general director,
and Patrice Croteau, vice-president, are the new administrators of the business.
Fromagerie Perron is currently undertaking a major reengineering which, in
addition to objectives of asset protection, also aims to develop the company
in order to face market globalization and the growing demands of customers.
The Perron cheese factory honours its commitment to always offer best quality
products.
